The days are getting longer – finally! We can begin to think about spending more time outside, but it is still decidedly chilly. We are still teaching and still learning. Let’s dig into some terrific online distance learning teaching ideas to use as we move into Spring!
This is the time of year where kids are settling into a routine and eager for the end of the school year. Some schools are just now going back to in-person learning. It’s almost like it’s the first day of school with students teachers have only seen through a computer.
Spring Distance Learning Ideas for Elementary Classrooms
While you may be teaching in-person, digital activities are likely still a priority in your classroom. Here are some spring virtual learning ideas.
Language Arts
While April Fools Day is mostly about pranks, you can include general humor by widening the scope just a bit. With that in mind, word play can be very entertaining to all ages!
This site is all about the pun – example: He bought a donkey because he thought he might get a kick out of it. Expect a few groans, depending on the age of the student, and remember: humor is subjective!
After students read and laugh at the puns, have them try writing some puns! If they come up with some creative ones, I’d love to hear them in the comments below!
Social Studies
Did you know that Arbor Day is April 30? Explore this site to learn more about the holiday, its origin and traditions. Children can use their knowledge in this quiz and become a Junior Arborist!
March 8 is International Women’s Day! This short video gives background on the holiday, while yet another location in National Geographic Kids provides informational articles on famous women – each one is simply a click away!
Science Spring Distance Learning Activities
Warmer weather means that we’ll be seeing more of our six-and eight-legged friends! National Geographic Kids is where it’s AT in terms of engaging, child-friendly content about insects. Love ladybugs? Fascinated by fireflies? Curious about cockroaches? This is where you want to be.
The site Ducksters always comes through in providing background for young learners that is relevant and easy to understand. This article on the origins of Earth Day is no exception. Test your knowledge! How about learning a little about this holiday? This quiz gives information and feedback as the student clicks through the questions.
These science resources are great for teaching about life cycles and pollution.
If you’re interested in more Spring Science Activities, take a look at this blog post. While it is focused on St. Patrick’s Day, many of the ideas can be used at any time this spring season. These science experiments are great to do in person or pass along to parents. Most of them require common kitchen ingredients.
Math Spring Distance Learning Activities
Who’s in the mood for some logic? Try this activity and see if you can determine how to get the goats, wolf and shepherd across the river while following the rules.
Crack! Spring means baseball! This Math Baseball game is great for practicing all basic operations including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division from grades K-5. The player can change the difficulty, making it easy to differentiate according to skill level.
Social-Emotional Learning
April Fools’ Day is a great time to explore humor and simply enjoy laughter. This site has lots of jokes for kids to tell – some funnier than others.
For a quick bit of fun that can spark conversation, here is a memory game that matches emotions with emojis.
One of my favorite spring resources is this spring flower. While it’s not digital, it is easy to copy and send home. It is a perfect craft for parents to do with their students and reflect on this difficult year.
